Mobile Trip

So I just came back to Auburn from Mobile this afternoon. We drove down to Mobile on Thursday and went to Destin Beach the next day. The weather was a lot more pleasant on the beach this time with cloudless sky and warm, beautiful water on the beach. We spent about 5 hours on the beach just enjoying the good weather and good sea food!

We stayed another day in Mobile hanging out. The trip would be excellent if I haven't bumped my car and made a dent on the hood. Looks like body work is inevitable.

Fun in Montgomery

I went to Eastdale Mall in Montgomery today with Halil to ice skate. This is my first time on ice since I came back from Huntsville -- that's about three months ago! Ice skating is always fun. I was pleased I able to do much of what I could do in Huntsville, after a few minutes of warming up. And I was happy I didn't fall once today :)

As for Halil, he was basically figure skating the whole time :). I just love the freedom of movements on ice, and we had a ton of fun!



After skating, we went to look for a store on McGhee Road (The Road that supposedly take you to Troy in the other direction). On the way there, we decided to check out the new Guitar Center on Eastern Boulevard where the BAM! used to be. The store's got drums, electric guitars, amplifiers for electric guitars (along with some other gears), and of course acoustic guitars! I recommend that store to any musician!

I really liked one of the black steel stringed acoustic guitar, and it's only a little over $200! I know my birthday is in December, but does anyone want to give me early birthday present? The other acoustic guitar I liked is like $2000, but it sounded really nice with clear tone and full sound. That's pretty much my day. I also helped my friend moving this morning.

Metallic Flat Pick

I had a little metal shaping project of my own today. I took an ordinary metallic finger picking pick, flattened it using a set of pliers, and turned the finger style pick into a flat pick! :D See the picture on the right.

The experiment was conceived, because I thought, the metallic finger pick sounds nice and bright when the strings are struck one at a time, so what would strumming with a metallic pick sound like?

It turns out that metal does not make a good flat pick for strumming. One of the reason is that, the pick could damage the strings. On a classical guitar, I can imagine doing some serious damage to its nylon strings. I have steel string so the danger is not so apparent. As for the sound goes, it sounds like metal scratching metal, and it's not because I have steel string, but because of the grooves wrapped around the slower strings. Overall, it sounds really chaotic with all the scratchy noise.

The End of 2006 Summer Semester

I'm in the middle of preparing/writing essay for the final I have today at 2 pm. After the final, I'll be officially done with summer school. Oh yea!

The school starts on the 16th of August, so I'll have a couple of weeks of break!
